THROWBACK THURSDAY - Ten years ago I was staying at a friend’s house in western Iowa. We made frequent trips into Omaha, Nebraska. During one of them, I witnessed to six skateboarders hanging out in a parking lot. Three of the guys held hands with me and experienced holy laughter as they got born again. Afterward, two of them wanted a photo with me. Psalm 16:11 says, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

Dolly Parton has died at 80. Like many other performers, the country music icon got her start singing in church. Her grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher. Dolly’s birth was even aided by a missionary. Although the singer professed to be a Christian throughout her career, I disagreed with some of the causes she supported. Nevertheless, I trust Dolly is rejoicing in heaven with her husband Carl Dean who passed away last year. Romans 10:13 says, “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

Jesus fed 5,000 but only 500 followed him after lunch. He had twelve disciples but only three went further in the garden, and only one stood with him at the cross. The closer you get to the cross, the smaller the crowd gets.

When doing street ministry, you often encounter individuals with strange ideas. Yesterday while witnessing to a group of people in Jacksonville Beach, one woman declared, “I believe in Jesus, but not the Bible.” I pointed out that’s a contradiction since John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Bible is the only book that you can never finish. It is alive! You will see new things each time you study it.

Today is the 75th birthday of the man who first taught me how to win souls for Jesus. Nick Kinn continues to oversee the evangelism ministry at Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. A former alcoholic, Pastor Nick has enjoyed the new wine of the Holy Spirit for the past half-century. Tomorrow happens to be the 50th anniversary of his salvation. He came within hours of getting born again on his birthday. Thanks again, Pastor Nick, for your faithful service to our Lord!

Some church folk eagerly talk about the latest scandal in the Body of Christ, but cannot tell you the last person they led to Jesus. Philippians 2:12 says to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Sometimes people tell me they are going to heaven because their parents are Christians. I reply, “If my parents were Satanists, would that make me one?” You can’t ride into heaven on the coattails of someone else. “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.” (Romans 14:12 NLT)

I’ve seen ignorant memes like this circulating on social media. For one thing, Jesus is the healer, but we are His hands and feet. The Great Commission (which includes laying hands on the sick and seeing them recover) applies to all believers. I mostly minister healing on the streets. However, I've done that a few times in hospitals and nursing homes. One involved a woman legally blind. She started seeing better, but later took a turn for the worse. This woman depended on other people praying for her instead of standing on God’s word for herself. Last month, I visited a fellow evangelist in the hospital. Despite my prayers, he died a short time later at 69. I recalled Kathryn Kuhlman was also in her late sixties when she resisted offers of prayer before dying in a hospital bed. She wanted to go home to be with the Lord. Sometimes our prayers go unanswered because of other people’s wills. Still, we shouldn’t let armchair Christians stop us from ministering to others. “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.” (1 Peter 2:15)

When you hear somebody use God’s name in vain, you can say, “God doesn’t need a dam. He can walk on water.”

Cell phones are a blessing, but they can also be an annoyance. Some Christians need to be more considerate of others when using theirs. At a recent revival meeting I attended, a man sitting nearby allowed his Android phone to make notification sounds throughout the minister’s sermon. Since no ushers were on duty, I walked over and asked this man to turn the sound off because it was a distraction. While staying in guest houses, I’ve had to deal with individuals who let their phones make noise throughout the night. At the time I’m writing this, a roommate’s phone alarm has been going off for over ten minutes, but he’s still sleeping! In these last days, quiet time has become a valuable commodity. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

I refrain from mocking individuals whose political beliefs diverge from my own. However, I believe this T-shirt accurately reflects the truth, except it should also include the King of Kings. Someday everyone will bow down to Him (Philippians 2:10).

Although the revivals in Toronto and Pensacola cooled off decades ago, heresy hunters still find fault with these moves of God. One cessationist recently wrote a post labeling the Brownsville Revival “God’s Fire Mixed With Strange Fire.” How would he know the difference if the gifts of the Spirit supposedly ended when the original apostles died? Critics make too much of a fuss over manifestations. They should examine the results of someone who might have fallen to the floor and shaken uncontrollably. Many have testified of loving Jesus more. Jesus said in Matthew 7:20 (NLT), “Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Seeing news reports of a friend’s house in Canton, Ohio exploding reminded me of what happened to my childhood home in 2018 months after my parents passed away. Fortunately, I have an eternal home waiting for me that will never be damaged by the enemy.
