T.L. Osborn was to take place on the Malieveld in The Hague, Holland. He was only two years old and had pleurisy. My parents believed in Divine healing and they also preached about that. They anointed their little boy with oil as the Bible teaches us in James 5 and prayed for healing. My parents prayed and believed that the Lord would heal their little one, but instead he died. It would have been easy for my parents to allow bitterness in their heart and get angry with God. But my parents did not allow this. They were not angry with God. God asked them: 'Do you still believe that I am the Lord, your Healer?' And they said: 'Yes Lord, we still believe that because Your Word says so.' The Story Behind the Hymns THE STORY BEHIND "BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD" 🎶 “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” is one of the most reflective and prayerful hymns in Christian worship. Paul also sets a seemingly unreachable goal – pray without ceasing. Spiritual Behaviour To watch in every season and pray without ceasing seems an unrealistic request, and yet we find both Christ and Paul giving believers a seemingly impossible task, but the physical action must be transliterated into a spiritual behaviour. Am I to be continually gazing out of the window or be forever crouched on my knees? Am I to neglect the daily duties of life or adopt the attitude of some pious monk? Godly Principle Not at all. But the injunction is to keep Christ as the pivotal point of all life. We are to pray continuously in the spirit and to be always watchful in spirit and truth. Spiritual watching and spiritual praying are two sides of the same spiritual coin. The Pharisees and religious leaders failed to understand the ‘spirit’ of the Law. They became entangled in their attempts to perform the spiritual in the physical,` They tried to carry out the letter of the command rather than the godly principle. Spiritually Alert We too must grasp the spirit of Christ’s earnest entreaties to watch and pray. We too must be unceasingly spiritual alert maintaining an unbroken attitude of heart. We are to clothe ourselves with a temperament of anticipated watchfulness. We are to develop a perspective of ceaseless prayerfulness. We are to watch and pray in spirit and in truth, at all times and without ceasing. Spiritually Equipped For what purpose are we implored to carry out this magnificent task….? Often it’s in the context of Christ’s return. We are to be spiritually ready for His return. Often it’s connected with Satan’s attacks and we must be spiritually equipped. We are to be ready: for we do not know the day or the time that our Lord will come.. but our readiness should not be in fear but a dear desire to be with the One we love. We are to be equipped: for the enemy is a roaring lion seeking who to devour, – but our alertness should be a deep concern to stand fast in the evil day for His sake. Standing Firm A watchful prayerfulness and a prayerful watch is linked is with patient endurance, and patient endurance is linked with standing firm in Christ. Patient endurance is to do with standing firm in the evil day, Paul warns us to:- “Stand therefore … and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 And the Lord Jesus Himself in this same context earnestly exhorts us to:- Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is” And He tells us:- “Take heed – See, I have told you all things beforehand.” Armour of God We can’t buckle on our armour as we hear the mighty floodgates burst open.. We can’t practice being covered by Him as the raging waters engulf our lives. I believe God is stripping away all areas of support upon which we have relied. I believe He is preparing a remnant that will stand fast in that evil day. I believe God wants a few watchmen that’ll truly recognise the approaching day. I believe that those heeding His warning will have prepared beforehand. Be Ready So how do we fulfil the continuous watch and unceasing prayer demanded here? For evil days will wax worse and worse and many will faint by the wayside.. Well the Lord Himself gives us the answers – we are not kept in the dark… He tells us – watch ye, then – in every season, praying that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. Luke 21:36 Constant Watchfulness Philips in his translation of this passage writes:- Watch out – don’t let My sudden coming catch you out, don’t let it find you living in careless ease, carousing and drinking. Don’t let Me find you occupied with the problems of this life either, like all the rest of the world are. Keep a constant watch and pray that it’s possible that you may arrive in My presence without having to experience these horrors. Prepare Hearts Should we not take the warnings of Christ as seriously as His precious promises? Should we not regard these words of scripture with equal care and caution? We are to guard our heart – in thought and word and deed and motive.. We are to obey His warning – and prepare our hearts for the days are evil.. We are to be ready and watch in every season and pray continuously. The Mosaic covenant was weak and ineffective in offering salvation. The earthly Tabernacle was a copy, not the actual dwelling of God. Christ serves as the mediator of a better covenant, ushering the worshipper into God's presence. The new covenant fosters a relationship with God based on grace, making us His tabernacle. Therefore, build your faith in Christ, not on mere rituals. Devouring means to eat something greedily and quickly. This is what the evil one does when he seduces God's children. He does not care how much pain you have, because he has no mercy. You are also not immune to his seductive power. The closer you live to God, the more the evil one will try to take you away from God. Jesus says: 'Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat' (Luke 22:31). The wicked do not have to be seduced by the evil one. They already live in sin anyway. Be happy with temptation When you are a child of God, it is not strange that you are tempted by the evil one, because he tries that with all of God's children. That is why the Bible says in James 1:2: 'Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.' You might ask: 'Why should I be joyous?' Well, God allows these temptations. He seeks people who are able to say afterwards: 'It was such a fierce battle but praise the Lord: God was with me. Hallelujah.' God trusts His child Getting into temptations is not a sign of weakness. No, it is an honor when you face temptations. It is a sign that God trusts His child. That is why He allows this. You can say in every circumstance of life: 'God is with me. I don't have to be scared. The evil one is powerless.' You have the shield of faith with which you can extinguish his flaming arrows. The evil one is a fool. If you know the almighty power of God, you are able to laugh at the tricks of the evil one. GUIDELINES FOR LIVING February 20th, 2026 What Does It Mean to Repent? If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 A man walked into a bank, handed the teller a threatening note and walked out with a bag of money. The man was never caught, but the whole thing has authorities baffled. It began a few months later when the bank received an envelope which had been mailed from a distant city containing a cashier’s check in the name of a Mr. R. E. Morse as in the word “remorse.” Along with one of the checks was the following note: “My faith in Christ as my Savior has impelled me to undertake this reimbursement and I hope to be able to pay it off within six months.” A bank official said, “I’ve heard of people coming forward and admitting complicity in criminal activity years before, but this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this.” Such is the power of a smitten conscience which produces real repentance—hence, the pseudonym—R. E. Morse. Now, if genuine repentance and remorse were more common, perhaps the bank officials wouldn’t be quite so shocked at what took place. Remorse is regret over something; repentance is positive action to make restitution for what was done. The word repentance, or repent, is found in the New Testament more than 50 times. The book of Hebrews lists it as an elementary doctrine of Christ—one of the foundational truths of the New Testament. Now, the early church took repentance seriously. Paul talked about it in letters to the Romans, the Corinthians, and to Timothy. The writers of Hebrews and Peter also discussed it. When Luke recorded the great commission, he included repentance as being part of the command laid down by Jesus Himself. “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47). Now, the fellow who robbed the bank became remorseful when he was converted, but he was genuinely repentant when he began to do something about his wrong by returning the money. In a very real sense, repentance is one of the sterling marks of genuine conversion—it’s obvious that God has wrought a work in your life when you become repentant. Question. Can a person be genuinely converted without repentance? Not according to Scripture. Jesus Himself commanded, “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Let me illustrate. Suppose you were in Tokyo and you received a telegram saying, “Return to Manila immediately.” To return to Manila, you must leave Tokyo; there’s no conceivable way you could get to Manila without leaving Tokyo. You can’t get to one without leaving the other. Now, genuine conversion demands leaving where you are, and that spells repentance. But there is even more to the concept than the outward actions. There is an internal, heart element as well. The Greek word metanoia comes from two words—meta meaning to change, and noia meaning mind or thought; hence, real repentance is a revolution of thought—a complete change of mind which results in a different kind of behavior. Perhaps real repentance will lead the person who robbed the bank to step forward and also accept the due consequences of his action. As J. Edwin Orr has written, “In other words, whenever a believer realizes that his life falls short of the standards of the Gospel, he must return to his change of mind, heart, and life, as at the beginning.” A renewed believer thus becomes equipped to preach a message of repentance through his life to his friends and neighbors, and to share in the repentance for national sins. “If we confess our sins,” says the Bible, “he’s faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
