📌 Today's Readings are from the Book of 1 Chronicles 5–6 | Ephesians 5 📌 👇 Overviews Are Below (PLEASE READ YOUR BIBLE: Overviews Do Not Replace Daily Reading) 👇 1 Chronicles 5 Faith, Failure, and the God Who Gives Victory 1 Chronicles 5 records the genealogies and history of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes settled east of the Jordan River because the land was suitable for their livestock. Although the chapter contains many names, it presents a clear spiritual contrast between trusting God in battle and later abandoning Him through idolatry. The chapter begins with Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son. Because of his sin, however, the privileges of the firstborn were divided among others. Joseph received the birthright, while Judah became the tribe from which the ruler would come. This reveals that spiritual privilege carries responsibility. Position alone cannot replace obedience and godly character. The mention of Judah’s leadership is especially important. Although the chapter focuses on the eastern tribes, it reminds readers that the promised ruler would come from Judah. God was already directing Israel’s history toward David and ultimately toward the Messiah. The tribes east of the Jordan became strong and numerous. When they faced powerful enemies, they cried out to God during the battle. The Lord answered them because they trusted Him. Their victory did not come merely from their military skill, organization, or numbers. God gave the enemy into their hands because the battle belonged to Him. This moment demonstrates the power of dependence upon the Lord. These warriors prepared responsibly, but their confidence was ultimately placed in God. Faith did not eliminate action; it directed their action and gave them confidence that the Lord was fighting on their behalf. Sadly, the chapter does not end with victory. Over time, these same tribes became unfaithful to the God of their fathers and pursued the false gods of the surrounding nations. The people who once cried out to God in dependence gradually turned away from Him in compromise. As a result, the Lord allowed foreign kings to carry them into exile. Their military strength could not protect them once they abandoned the God who had given them victory. The chapter shows that past faithfulness does not guarantee future faithfulness. Every generation must continue walking with the Lord. Theologically, 1 Chronicles 5 reveals that victory comes through faith and dependence upon God, while spiritual compromise eventually leads to loss. The Lord responds to those who cry out to Him, but He also disciplines His people when they persistently abandon His covenant. This chapter points to Christ, the promised Ruler from the tribe of Judah. Unlike Israel’s earthly warriors, Jesus won the ultimate battle through perfect obedience to the Father. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated sin, death, and every spiritual enemy. All who trust in Him share in His victory. For believers today, 1 Chronicles 5 reminds us not to rely upon past victories, spiritual heritage, or personal strength. We must continue trusting the Lord in every battle and guarding our hearts against compromise. In Christ, we have a victorious King who hears us when we call upon Him and gives us strength to remain faithful. The battle belongs to the Lord, but we are called to walk in continual dependence, obedience, and trust. 1 Chronicles 6 Called to Worship and Serve in God’s Presence 1 Chronicles 6 focuses on the tribe of Levi, the family appointed by God to serve in connection with the tabernacle, the temple, the priesthood, and the worship of Israel. While the previous chapters trace royal and tribal lines, this chapter emphasizes the spiritual leadership that God established among His people. The genealogy traces the priestly line from Levi through Aaron and eventually to those who served before and after the exile. These records confirm that priestly service was not based upon personal ambition or human appointment. God called and established those who would minister before Him. Aaron’s descendants carried the responsibility of offering sacrifices and ministering at the altar. Their service reminded Israel that sinful people could not approach a holy God casually. Sacrifice, cleansing, mediation, and obedience were necessary because God is holy. The chapter also gives attention to the Levites who served through music and worship. David appointed singers to minister before the Lord, and their service became an important part of Israel’s spiritual life. Worship was not treated as an afterthought. It was organized, intentional, and centered upon the greatness of God. Different Levite families received different responsibilities. Some served as priests, others as singers, gatekeepers, assistants, or caretakers of sacred things. No single family performed every task. God distributed responsibilities so that His people would serve together in unity. This reveals that ministry is both spiritual and practical. Public worship depends upon many faithful servants fulfilling responsibilities that others may never notice. God values every role when it is performed with humility and faithfulness. The chapter also records the cities assigned to the Levites throughout Israel. Rather than receiving one large territory, the Levites were scattered among the tribes. Their presence reminded the entire nation of God’s Word, worship, and covenant. Spiritual instruction was intended to influence every part of Israel’s life. Yet the priesthood and sacrificial system were never the final answer to humanity’s sin. The priests themselves were imperfect and needed sacrifices for their own sins. Their ministry pointed beyond itself toward a greater Priest who would provide a complete and lasting sacrifice. Theologically, 1 Chronicles 6 reveals God’s holiness and His gracious provision for worship. He appoints priests, establishes sacrifice, orders ministry, and gives His people a way to approach His presence. The chapter also demonstrates that every form of service matters within the work of God. This chapter points directly to Jesus Christ, our perfect High Priest. Unlike the descendants of Aaron, Jesus is sinless and serves forever. He did not repeatedly offer animal sacrifices but offered Himself once for all. Through His finished work, believers receive forgiveness and direct access to the Father. For believers today, 1 Chronicles 6 reminds us that worship and service must remain central in our lives. Every believer has been called to serve according to the gifts and responsibilities God provides. Some roles are visible, while others are performed quietly, but every faithful act contributes to the work of God’s kingdom. In Christ, we are brought near to God and made part of a royal priesthood. We no longer depend upon an earthly priest to enter God’s presence on our behalf because Jesus has opened the way. Our response should be lives of worship, holiness, gratitude, and faithful service to the One who has redeemed us. Ephesians 5 — Walking in Love, Light, and Wisdom Through the Christ Ephesians chapter 5 continues Paul's practical instruction by describing what it means to live as those who have been transformed by the Christ, the Son of God. Building upon the call to put off the old way of life, this chapter presents three defining characteristics of Christian living: walking in love, walking in light, and walking in wisdom. Each of these is rooted in the believer's relationship with the Christ and reflects God's redemptive plan at work in everyday life. The chapter begins by calling believers to imitate God as His beloved children. This imitation is seen most clearly in love. The Christ demonstrated perfect love by willingly giving Himself for the salvation of humanity. His sacrificial love becomes both the foundation and the model for Christian living. The redemptive plan is centered on the self-giving love of the Son of God, and believers are called to reflect that same love in their relationships with others. Paul then contrasts this Christlike love with the sinful attitudes and behaviors that belong to the old life. Greed, impurity, selfishness, and corrupt speech are inconsistent with the new identity believers have received in the Christ. Christian living is marked by holiness because the Son of God has called His people to reflect His character. The redemptive plan transforms both the heart and the conduct of those who belong to Him. The chapter next describes believers as children of light. Having been rescued from spiritual darkness through the Christ, they are now called to live in a way that reflects truth, righteousness, and goodness. Light exposes what is hidden and reveals what pleases God. Christian living therefore requires discernment, continually choosing what honors the Son of God rather than conforming to the values of the world. Paul encourages believers to use their time wisely because the days are spiritually challenging. Rather than living carelessly, they are to seek the will of the Lord in every circumstance. The redemptive plan gives purpose to every moment of life. The Christ calls His followers to invest their lives in what has eternal value, recognizing that each day presents opportunities to glorify Him. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of being continually filled with the Holy Spirit. Instead of seeking satisfaction in temporary pleasures, believers are called to live under the Spirit's influence. This produces worship, gratitude, encouragement, and joyful obedience. Christian living is sustained by the continual work of the Holy Spirit, who enables believers to reflect the life of the Son of God. Paul then turns to relationships within the home, particularly marriage. He presents marriage as a living picture of the relationship between the Christ and His Church. Husbands are called to love sacrificially, following the example of the Son of God who gave Himself for His people. Wives are called to respond with respect and willing support. This relationship reflects God's redemptive plan by displaying the love, unity, and faithfulness that exist between the Christ and His redeemed people. The chapter concludes by elevating the significance of marriage beyond human companionship. Marriage becomes a testimony to the gospel itself. Just as the Christ lovingly cares for, nourishes, and sanctifies His Church, believers are called to reflect His character in their homes and relationships. Christian living demonstrates the reality of the gospel not only in public ministry but also in the ordinary rhythms of daily life. Throughout Ephesians chapter 5, the Christ remains the perfect example of love, holiness, wisdom, and sacrificial leadership. Every instruction flows from His character and points believers back to His finished work. The redemptive plan transforms every area of life, enabling God's people to walk in a manner worthy of the calling they have received. For believers today, this chapter reminds us that our lives should continually reflect the character of the Christ. Christian living means walking in sacrificial love, shining as children of light, living wisely, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide every decision. Whether in our worship, our relationships, or our daily responsibilities, we are called to display the beauty of the Son of God. It is not the night that kills, but the frost.’ Think about this: of the 1,189 chapters in the Bible, 250 contain the words of the prophets. That’s roughly 25 percent. Half of what they say denounces sin and the other half condemns those who see human suffering and do nothing about it. Yet events that horrified those same prophets take place in our world every day, and we’re immune to them. Like wearing a watch, you get used to it and after a while you don’t even notice it. But the prophets noticed! They never became desensitised to sin—or human suffering. And you mustn’t either. It may be that they had recorded successes in previous battles, or have become famous for their accomplishments. They may deem themselves to be invincible, and either declare a war that's totally unnecessary, or inject themselves into other people's battles. In the end, they become the victims of their ego and exaggerated sense of power and importance.* *This is what happened to the kings of the nations on the east of River Jordan. The children of Israel were on a journey ordered by the Almighty God. They were heading to the land of Canaan, in fulfilment of the promise God made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Their land was not part of Canaan, and therefore, was not intended to be inherited by the Israelites. The inheritance of the Israelites was to be solely Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey. But on their way, the Israelites encountered nations that had heard about the supernatural work of God in bringing them out of Egypt. Although the Israelites did not declare war against them, these nations, some out of unfounded fear of losing their territory, and others out of envy and hatred against this nation that had a God that can subdue, humble and defeat Egypt, the great world power of the time, took it on themselves to stop Israel from progressing towards their land of promise. One of such kings was Sihon, king of the Amorites, whose nation was mainly a lush vegetation sandwiched by rivers and plain land that was a haven for pastoralists and for other forms of agriculture. The other king was Og, king of Bashan, a land of the remnants of the giants, with similar topography as the land of the Amorites. When they rose against the Israelites, they were roundly defeated, their kingdoms destroyed and their land confiscated by Moses. He subsequently allocated the land to two and half tribes of Israel, which desired to settle there because it was suitable for their vocation as pastoralists. Had those nations stayed out of the way of the Israelites, they would have remained in their land.* *We must be wise and not take on battles that are not ours, whether out of sympathy with other people or to prove that we are powerful. As believers, we have more than enough battles against principalities and powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places, against sin and Satan. The armour Christ has given us is intended to defeat these adversaries. It is not to be wasted on self-imposed battles that do not benefit the kingdom of God. Those who engage in the wrong battles suffer great loss, and live to regret it for the rest of their lives. Some are penned down in the Bible while there are many more that have been experienced by individuals, families, communities and nations since creation of man. The fact that God is immutable guarantees that those miracles can be repeated and increased in greatness and number. One of the greatest ways to strengthen faith is to deliberately rehearse God's faithfulness and meditate on those past wonders of God. Throughout Scripture, God often instructed His people to remember His mighty acts so that they would trust Him for future victories. Israel's conquest of the Amorites under Sihon and the later record of those victories in Joshua remind us that God's past interventions are powerful testimonies of His unfailing covenant. Every believer should cultivate the habit of recalling God's goodness instead of dwelling on past fears or failures. As we recount His faithfulness, our confidence in His promises grows. *1.Arrogant Courting of Battles* Israel peacefully requested passage through the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites, but Sihon arrogantly rejected the request and chose war instead (Numbers 21:21–25). It is the norm in military warfare that you don't fight those who come and prefer peace to war. The worst is to lead them as captives. Sihon had taken pride in defeating Moab and taking her possessions (Numbers 21:26-2). Their victory over Moab was celebrated as it became a song in the land. He was optimistic and emboldened that he could repeat the same feat against Israel. However, he was thoughtless and proud. His pride blinded him to the fact that he was fighting against God's covenant people. It is dangerous and risky to fight against the covenant people of God. The battle ended in complete defeat of Sihon because no human strength can prevail against God's purpose. b. Believers have the domineering power of Jesus Christ to crush every power of the adversaries. However, this is not a license for believers to arrogantly court and tempt the people of darkness to unnecessary warfare. When Herod wanted Jesus to perform some miracles for a show of power, Jesus declined because it was unnecessary (Luke 23:8). When Satan tempted Jesus to jump down from the mountain, Jesus also declined because it was an unnecessary show of power. Believers should avoid unnecessary boasting and fight in the name of the Lord that is borne out of arrogance or pride. Believers should never fear opposition, for God remains the Defender of those who trust Him. At the same time, we must guard against pride, remembering that arrogance always invites destruction. *Question* Am I trusting God's strength in life's battles, or am I relying on human confidence and pride? *2. Appreciative Counting of Blessings* Joshua carefully recorded the kings and their land, whom God had delivered into Israel's hands (Joshua 12:1–5). These verses are more than historical records—they are memorials of divine faithfulness. God's people are encouraged to remember every victory and every answered prayer. Gratitude protects the heart from discouragement and unbelief. When we regularly count our blessings, we discover that God's mercies greatly outweigh our trials. Thanksgiving also prepares us to receive greater blessings from the Lord. As the psalmist puts it, *"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits."* This will take a diligent and deliberate effort like Joshua did when he wrote down and recalled the good wonders of God to himself and to the whole Israel. *Question* How often do I deliberately remember and thank God for His past faithfulness in my life? *3. Additions to Covenant for the Beloved* a. The conquered territories were not part of the promised Canaan inheritance. But Sihon and Og lost their land through their pride and arrogance and those blessings were taken from them and added to the children of Israel (Joshua 12:6). After getting victory, Moses assigned the conquered territory to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh as their inheritance. God's faithfulness extends beyond victory in battle to the fulfillment of His covenant promises. b. There are several cases where God took away the assigned blessing of the arrogant and added them to the portion of the godly. Reuben and Esau were supposed to have the double blessings of their first born, but they both lost them through carelessness and profanity. Their blessings were added to Judah and Jacob respectively. Jesus warned the Ephesian Church of loss of ministry if they didn't repent from the loss of their first love and the immoral practices of the Nicolaitans(Revelation 2:5). He also warned the Pastor of Philadelphia that if he was not watchful, his crown would be taken from him and be given or added to another person. *"Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown"* (Revelation 3:11). Remember, King Saul lost his crown, which was supposed to be generational, to David. The same with Esau and none of them could get his back. Fight and be watchful to retain and enjoy all your blessings and inheritance assigned to you by God. *Question* Am I very watchful and prayerful in ensuring that my blessings and inheritance are not taken from me and transferred to another person? *Prayer Points* 1.Heavenly Father, help me always remember and celebrate Your faithfulness in every season of my life 🙏. 2.Lord, deliver me from every form of pride, boasting and unnecessary show of power and grant me victory over every battle confronting my faith 🙏. 3.Give me a grateful heart that continually counts Your blessings instead of focusing on life's difficulties. 4.Give Your children grace to be watchful and prayerful and don't allow anyone to take their assigned blessings and inheritance 🙏. *HYMN:* Count Your Blessings *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* EXODUS 26-29. 2. The Story Behind the Hymns. THE STORY BEHIND "MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF THE COMING OF THE LORD" Some hymns belong to a church while others become part of the history of a people. “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Coming of the Lord,” widely known as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” belongs to the second category. Its story is tied to one of the darkest chapters in American history: the Civil War, a conflict that split the United States and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Slavery stood at the centre of the crisis, and the question of whether a nation could call itself free while millions remained enslaved had become impossible to avoid. In 1861, Julia Ward Howe, a writer, poet and abolitionist, was in Washington, D.C., when she encountered Union troops singing “John Brown’s Body,” a marching song already popular among soldiers. The tune stayed with her. Someone suggested that she write new words for it. She did. According to Howe’s own account, the words came to her in the early hours of the morning. She woke with the opening line in her mind and began writing, afraid that the verses would escape her if she waited for daylight. “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord…” What followed was not a conventional hymn of comfort. Howe wrote with the language of the Old Testament prophets — judgment, wrath, righteousness and redemption. The battlefield became the setting for a larger moral argument. “He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.” The line was stark and so was the time in which it was written. The hymn was published in the Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. It quickly found an audience among Union supporters and soldiers, giving words to a cause that many believed demanded more than military victory. The fight, in the hymn’s telling, was bound to a moral reckoning. Then came the line that would outlive the war: “His truth is marching on.” Those five words helped turn a Civil War song into an enduring hymn. For soldiers heading into battle, the words could sound like a declaration of faith. For abolitionists, they carried the promise that slavery would not have the final word. For families waiting at home, the hymn gave voice to the uncertainty, grief and conviction that defined the period. Its reach did not end when the guns fell silent. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” went on to become one of the most recognisable songs in American religious and public life. It has been heard in churches, at memorials, political gatherings, military ceremonies and historic moments across generations. Its power however, lies in more than its stirring melody. It was born at a time when America was asking whether freedom could survive its own contradictions. Julia Ward Howe answered with a poem that placed justice at the centre of the national struggle. More than a century and a half later, the words remain remarkably direct. They remind us that history is not always changed in grand halls or on battlefields. Sometimes it begins in the early hours of the morning, with a writer reaching for a pen before the words disappear. Seek God's Direction Before the Battle Scripture Judges 20:18 (NKJV) So the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God to inquire of God. They said, Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin? The LORD said, Judah first! Obedience Is More Than Asking God for Direction Judges 20 records Israel's response to the horrific events of Judges 19. The nation gathered together in unity to confront the tribe of Benjamin because of the wickedness committed in Gibeah. Their desire for justice was right, but the chapter reveals that even a righteous cause must be pursued with humble dependence upon God. Before going to battle, the people sought the Lord and asked which tribe should lead the attack. God answered their question, and Judah went first. Yet despite seeking God's direction, Israel suffered a devastating defeat. They returned to the Lord weeping and inquiring again, and once more God instructed them to fight. Again they experienced heavy losses. Only after they humbled themselves through fasting, worship, sacrifices, and sincere dependence upon the Lord did God give them complete victory over Benjamin. This chapter teaches an important spiritual lesson. It is possible to ask God for guidance while still relying upon our own strength. Israel initially wanted God's direction, but they had not yet reached the place of complete surrender. As the battle continued, their confidence shifted from their own military strength to total dependence upon God. Believers often make the same mistake. We ask God to bless our plans while still trusting in our own wisdom, abilities, or resources. God desires more than our questions; He desires our hearts. True faith is not simply asking God what to do but trusting Him completely as we obey Him. Judges 20 also reminds us that God's timing and methods are sometimes different from our expectations. Temporary setbacks do not always mean we are outside God's will. Sometimes God uses difficulty to deepen our dependence upon Him and to teach us humility before He grants victory. The Lord desires His people to seek Him with sincerity, worship Him with humility, and trust Him completely. Victory belongs to those who rely on His strength rather than their own. Reflection Questions 1. Am I seeking God's direction while still depending on my own strength? 2. How do I respond when God allows temporary setbacks in my life? 3. What area of my life needs greater surrender and trust in the Lord today? Prayer Heavenly Father, teach me to depend completely on You. Help me not only to seek Your guidance but also to trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your strength. When I face challenges or disappointments, keep me from becoming discouraged. Instead, draw me closer to You and deepen my faith. May my confidence always rest in Your power and not in my own abilities. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Some demanded human sacrifice; others permitted prostitution and even promoted it in their temples. When we reverse the order and start to create God in our own image (according to our own imagination) we get the following things: 1) A god who’s liberal or conservative, a hawk or a dove; a god politicians conveniently pull out of a box at election time to gain votes even though they don’t truly serve him. 2) A flexible god who permits you to do whatever you want, and you can then say, ‘I just felt led to do it.’ 3) A god who promises to bless his children but never discipline them. 4) A god you can ‘keep in his place’ until you need him. 5) A god who is not supreme but happy to be one of many deities offering many ways to heaven. Not so! God says, ‘I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no saviour.’ Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’ (John 14:6 NKJV). But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul"_ (Hebrews 10:38,39). *INTRODUCTION* 40 years have passed now when they left Egypt with great joy and hope coupled with triumph over the oppressive and terrorizing Egyptians. Little did they know the challenges that will greet them on the way. A few days journey from Kadesh to Jordan turned to 40 years. All the adults, except Caleb and Joshua, who left Egypt died without reaching the promised Canaan. Unfortunately, Moses, their faithful leader, including their high priest Aaron, and Miriam the Women Leader were painfully casualties. They just finished mourning Moses for 30 days. That was not their plan and expectations when they left Egypt. However, they must move on and enter the land of promise after all those setbacks. This takes courage and faith in God. The Christian life is similar especially, when the heart is not sanctified. Starting with the indescribable Joy of Salvation, the journey to heaven began. But unexpectedly, along the way, there are battles to fight, divine disciplines to endure and challenges meant to perfect that will be experienced. Those experiences and setbacks should not becloud our forward march to heaven; we must keep moving on until we enter the promised heaven. The Apostles were said to be *"Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom"* (Acts 14:22). *1. The Command to be Observed with Unwavering Faith* a. Joshua commanded the captains to *"Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals"*. Some people who willingly obey the commandments in their work places, public transports, whether land, air or sea, deride commandments when it comes from God through church leaders or shepherds. Some refused or stopped going to church because of their hate for commandments. They often talk of human rights, human free will etc when commandments are given by God through His ministers. The truth is that no man, no matter how wise or intelligent, can live happily or successfully in the world without learning to listen to instructions or commandments and follow them in every sphere of life. The Word of God is filled with instructions and commandment because none can claim to know the correct and fulfilling routes in life when he has never passed through it. Human security, safety, fulfillment and joy are tied to the ability to hear, listen and obey godly instructions and commandments. The 'dos' and 'don'ts' of the Word of God, which carnal minds reject, are actually, the path way to a happy and fulfilling life. b. Moses, their Prophet par excellence who used to see and hear from God directly was gone. Yet they did not idolize Moses that since Moses was gone all hope was lost. Their confidence was in God without any cult personality. True believers should not see any of their leaders as a cult personality to idolize. Cult personality in the household of faith is carnality and idol worship in action. Any God-given leader at any time should be obeyed and followed because it is the commandment of God and His Word that matters most and not the human vessel. Israel lost nothing as a result of the death of Moses. The same God who moved mightily in Moses also moved greatly in Joshua that Israel never regretted the death of Moses. The Command of Joshua was military in nature, but obeying it will require courage and faith. *"Within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it"*. Looking back, many souls have died without receiving the promise. Looking forward to Jordan that it would take a great miracle like it happened in the Red Sea before they could pass. However, Joshua gave the commandment as if the Jordan challenge was not there. Israel also did not raise alarm about the humanly impassable Jordan. They all jointly and unitedly believed God that crossing was a done deal since it was God who commanded and God had done it before. We must move on by faith to the hope set before us with courage. Since God has promised to take us to heaven, no need to fear the assault of persistent temptations, the murmurs of persecutions and afflictions, the threat of marital and career setbacks and the cruel dread of principalities and power. Just move on in obedience and faith according to His Word and be sure you will land on the other side of the river. *Question* Have you decided to continue the journey to the end no matter the challenges on the way? *2.Care to be Offered to the Unsettled Families* a. The Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh were given their land and possession before they crossed the Jordan River. Now that the soldiers of those tribes were settled, it was tempting for them to quit the journey and go to their rest. Moses settled that need for genuine brotherly love before he died. Joshua recalled that because he knew that the commandment of God does not die with the vessel that God used to declare it. He said, *"Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land"*. The vulnerable were to stay behind in the promised land while their soldiers joined the remaining Israelites to fight the Canaanites. There was no rest for them until their brethren had rest. Obeying that would require faith and a golden caring heart. First, who would protect those vulnerable two and half tribes when all their soldiers leave them behind? David did that for his wives and vulnerable followers in Ziklag and the Amalekites overran the wives and carried away everything belonging to them. Was that commandment of Moses reasonable? It was reasonable since it was given by God. It was reasonable because faith in God would not be disappointed. It was reasonable because the law of love is stronger than the law of self protection. This is the lesson for us as to how God works. b. *"Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill ye the law of Christ"* (Galatians 6:2). Any law, policy or principle that does not visibly reflect the care and love for one another in the family, church and among neighbours is not of God no matter how the world exalts it. Practical and sacrificial care for one another is the hall mark of Christianity. When that is missing, the Christian faith is not different from other religions. Believers should lighten burdens of others, wiping off bitter tears, relieving the oppressed, putting the balm of Gilead in the troubled souls in addition to assisting and supporting others through prayer. Selfishness, self interest, self protection, self respect, etc.are being imported into the church as wisdom, but they are not Christlike. *"Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others"* (Philippians 2:4). This is a commandment. *Question* Are you practically bearing others burdens or are you hypocritically selfish? *3. Consecration to Obedience and Unity by the Faithful* a. Christian consecration is the solemn act of setting apart a person, place or thing from ordinary, secular use and dedicating it entirely to God and holy purposes. This includes consecration to do and obey the Word of God. It is difficult in these last days of superficial christianity and devotion to deliberately, doggedly and determinedly stick to the Word of God without definite consecrations. When it comes to unity among brethren, many things often threaten unity and it takes consecration with godly unity in order to ensure the unity of the saints. This is needful because the victory, the blessings and divine visitations on a people are tightly connected to unity. Unity must be encouraged and enforced in order to enjoy God's bests. *"Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the body of peace"*. We must preach it, pray for it, practice it and pass it on to the future generations. Would the Holy Spirit have descended on the Early Church if they were not united in the Upper Room? If the Trinity is not united, what would the world look like? *"And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go"*. It takes deliberate consecration to God to obey all the commandments of God without complaining. It takes consecration to follow a man of like passion wholeheartedly. Consecrations are milestones to spiritual maturity and profitability in the hands of God. After many months, his plans were completed and placed in the hands of those who were to be in charge of the bridge's construction. After a considerable period, the construction was completed. The engineer was brought on his bed to the scene of the beautiful bridge spanning the wide river. As he watched for the first time as cars sped over the bridge, and as he looked at the blueprints which he held in his hands, tears began to fill his eyes, and he cried out, "It's just like the plan; it's just like the plan." Undoubtedly, the sense of accomplishment brought tears of joy to the eyes of the intelligent and fulfilled engineer. His good works serve humanity! What a lesson! We must live to add value to others.* *Today's passage centres on the preparation of Israel to go in and possess the Promised Land under the able leadership of Joshua, the son of Nun, the commander of the army of Israel after the death of Moses. This time, they were on the verge of entering Canaan. Strategically, he told the army to prepare, and he reminded the three tribes: Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh of their promise to Moses that they would cross the River Jordan and fight alongside the nine and the half tribes until they possessed their inheritance before returning to settle on the east side of Jordan. The tribal leaders affirmed their commitment and promised to follow Joshua as they followed Moses, irrespective of the challenges ahead.* *The salient lesson here include the unity among the tribes, cooperation with the leader, and Joshua's uncompromising, indefatigable leadership style that gave Israel the edge. As a result, the nation won battles, conquered adversaries, and possessed the Promised Land.* *Families, churches, societies and nations that desire victory in life's battles and challenges must follow the same pattern. Beyond earthly victories and possessions, there is an enduring possession in heaven for the saints of God. After hearing the Book of the Law and humbling himself before the Lord, Josiah immediately begins leading the nation back to covenant faithfulness. His response demonstrates that genuine revival always begins with God's Word and continues through obedient action. Josiah gathers the people and publicly renews the covenant before the Lord. He does not keep God's truth private but calls the entire nation to return to faithful worship. The king understands that spiritual renewal must involve both personal repentance and public obedience. The reforms that follow are comprehensive. Josiah removes idols, destroys pagan altars, eliminates false worship, and cleanses the temple. Nothing that competes with devotion to the Lord is left untouched. His actions reveal that true repentance is more than sorrow over sin—it involves turning away from everything that dishonors God. One of the most significant moments in the chapter is the restoration of the Passover. For generations, this central celebration of God's redeeming work had been neglected. By restoring it, Josiah calls the nation to remember God's covenant faithfulness and their identity as His redeemed people. The chapter records the fulfillment of what God had patiently declared for generations. Babylon rises to become the dominant world power, and Judah gradually falls under its control. Political alliances fail, military strength proves insufficient, and the nation experiences the consequences of years of covenant unfaithfulness. The writer emphasizes that these events are not simply the result of Babylon's military superiority but the outworking of God's righteous judgment. The chapter repeatedly points back to the sins of Manasseh and the persistent rebellion that followed him. Judah has consistently rejected God's Word, ignored His prophets, and embraced idolatry. The chapter reveals the immeasurable spiritual riches believers possess because they are united with the Christ. Christian living begins by understanding what God has already accomplished through His Son. The chapter begins by praising God for every spiritual blessing given through the Christ. These blessings are not earned through human effort but freely given by God's grace. The redemptive plan begins with God's initiative, not humanity's achievement. Every blessing believers enjoy flows from their relationship with the Son of God. Paul explains that God's purpose was established before the foundation of the world. Long before humanity fell into sin, God had already planned redemption through the Christ. This demonstrates the certainty and sovereignty of His redemptive plan. Be Careful Who You Follow Scripture Judges 18:30 (NKJV) Then the children of Dan set up for themselves the carved image; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. A False Religion Can Never Replace True Worship Judges 18 continues the spiritual decline that began in the previous chapter. The tribe of Dan had not fully taken possession of the inheritance God had given them, so instead of trusting the Lord, they sought an easier path. Rather than depending on God's promises, they relied on human wisdom and military strength to secure a new territory. As the men of Dan traveled, they came to Micah's house, where they found the Levite serving as a priest over Micah's private shrine. Instead of rejecting the idols and false worship, they stole Micah's carved images, household idols, ephod, and priest, believing these things would bring God's blessing wherever they went. The Levite willingly abandoned Micah because serving an entire tribe seemed like a greater opportunity than serving one family. His decision was motivated by personal advancement rather than faithfulness to God. After conquering the peaceful city of Laish, the tribe of Dan established idol worship there and appointed the Levite and his descendants as priests. What began as one family's compromise became the official religion of an entire tribe. This chapter demonstrates how compromise spreads. One person's disobedience influenced a family, then a priest, and eventually an entire tribe. When God's truth is abandoned, false worship quickly takes its place. Believers today face similar dangers. Culture continually offers substitutes for true worship—success, possessions, popularity, pleasure, and personal opinions. Yet anything that replaces complete devotion to God becomes an idol. God calls His people to remain faithful to His Word, even when compromise appears easier or more successful. True worship is not determined by convenience or popularity but by obedience to the Lord. Reflection Questions 1. Is there anything in my life competing for the place that belongs only to God? 2. Am I making decisions based on God's Word or on what seems easiest or most beneficial? 3. What kind of spiritual influence am I leaving on my family and those around me? Prayer Heavenly Father, keep my heart devoted to You alone. Protect me from compromise and from anything that would become an idol in my life. Help me to seek Your will instead of the easiest path. In Exodus, God told Israel, ‘…eat…fully dressed as if you were going on a trip…have your sandals on and your walking stick in your hand.’ In other words, ‘Be ready when I tell you to move!’ Maybe there’s an area in your life where God is telling you it’s time to move, but fear is making you hold back. Don’t! Change is just evidence of growth. What worked yesterday can be tomorrow’s recipe for failure. You can’t become who you are destined to be, if you insist on staying as you are. John Patterson said, ‘Only fools and dead men don’t change…Fools won’t, and dead men can’t.’ Change isn’t the enemy. Once you start seeing yourself as a lifelong learner looking for ways to grow and improve, change becomes your friend. Learn from the people you meet, pursue new ideas, strategies, and ways to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Jim Penner says: ‘Our bodies change no matter how hard we exercise…Our homes change as our needs ebb and flow. Our places of employment change as the winds of economic forces blow and new opportunities come…friendships change as family needs and employment pull us away…While many changes become enjoyable new seasons…sometimes they’re painful. But no matter what season of change you’re experiencing…you can find comfort in Malachi 3:6, ‘I am God…I haven’t changed…’ (TM). Martin (1878) penned down this song relevant to the topic of discussion. "In the warfare that is raging For the truth and for the right, When the conflict, fierce, is raging With the powers of the night, God needs people brave and true: May He then depend on you? Refrain: May the Lord depend on you? Loyalty is but His due; Say, O spirit, brave and true, That He may depend on you". God's covenants to Israel were majorly earthly and therefore, their warfares to possess their promises were physical. For the New Testament, the covenant is mostly spiritual and heavenly and therefore the warfares of the New Testament saints are spiritual. *"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal..."* (2 Corinthians 10:4). Lessons on Old Testament physical warfares are meant to teach the New Testament saints some important features of spiritual warfare which is a major part of successful and victorious Christian living. Joshua and Israel faced formidable kings, fortified cities and numerous enemies, yet God gave them victory. Their exploits demonstrated that conquering faith rested on obedience to God's authority and instructions with perseverance until the battle was completely won. When faith is anchored in God, no enemy can ultimately withstand His purpose for His people. *1. Determined Destruction Accomplished* a. God had concluded from the time of Abraham that the Amorites would be obliterated when their iniquities reached the peak when God could no more tolerate them (Genesis 15:15,16; Exodus 34:11-13). The time now came to start possessing the land as promised, but they must fight for it, for it would not come on a platter of gold. All the promises of God have been paid for by the finished work of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. However, the adversary is always there to contest against those blessings and believers must be ready to contend and possess it as God has given us assurance of victory as legitimate owners of the blessings. Our Lord Himself said, *"the kingdom of God suffereth violence and the violent taketh it by force"* (Matthew 11:12). The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 were commended for their violence of faith, courage and determination as they fought spiritual warfares. The violence of believers is spiritual and had to do with violence and force of faith. Nobody will be able to possess his possessions here on earth and enter heaven eventually if he does not learn to be brave and violent in spiritual warfare against the flesh, fiends, faithlessness, fear and foolishness. b. Joshua did not leave unfinished what God had commanded him to accomplish. Hazor, the head of the northern kingdoms, was captured and destroyed and its king was put to death. The destruction was decisive because Joshua understood that partial obedience could jeopardize the victory God had promised. Conquering faith is determined faith—it does not retreat because the opposition is strong or the assignment is difficult. What God commands must be pursued with courage and perseverance. Joshua, with courageous faith, moved along the will and Word of God and destroyed those that God had condemned to destruction because they refused to repent. *Question* Are there areas of your life where God expects you to exercise determined faith and completely overcome persistent opposition? *2. Done According to the Divine Authority* a. The destruction of the Canaanites by Joshua in the text took about 7 years though it was recorded as if they all happened in rapidity. God had told them that they would conquer the land *"little by little"*. (Exodus 23:30, Deuteronomy 7:22). You don't expect those formidable enemies to be overcome without giving a strong fight and resistance. Spiritual wars, like the physical wars are at times protracted. In order to overcome the adversary, there is a need to maintain a persistent and untiring warfare disposition and attitude for Satan and his agents will not give up without a strong and persistent resistance. So, fight manfully onward and never give up but persist until you laugh last. God has destined and programmed you for total victory. The "little by little" approach also gave the Canaanites the opportunity to repent and seek for mercy like Rahab and her household and the Gibeonites did. Joshua acted according to the command of the LORD. Those who perished must have been adamant because it had been settled that Israel would destroy all of them just like Rahab confessed (Joshua 2:9-11). All those who perished perished because they chose to and not for lack of opportunity to repent. Rahab and her household, the Giebeonites and the Shechemites decided not to perish and they did not because they did the needful. Those people refused to repent, their hearts were hardened through rejection of mercy. This hardening of men’s hearts is when God gives man up to his sin after the person refused the mercy of God (Romans 1:24-28). b. How could Joshua have overcome? Israel was not trained in the art of warfare at the time. Second, Israel did not have horses and chariots to fight, whereas the Canaanites had in abundance. Yet, God told them that it was a battle of faith and therefore, they should not fear the better equipped and stronger adversaries. *"And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire"*. It was like the case of little David versus the giant Goliath. Spiritual battles, while doing the needful, do not look at the size and the arrogance of the adversaries. With faith in God, their horses and chariots will be defeated. *"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God"* (Psalm 20:7). Can you imagine a poorly trained and inexperienced army of Israel defeating better trained coalition of nations in their multitudes with their horses and chariots? Obeying God's Word and instruction is always a guarantee of victory regardless of the might and the arsenal of the adversaries. Joshua did not depend on personal wisdom or military strength; he carried out God's instructions. Verse 15 emphasizes that Joshua did everything the LORD commanded Moses, and Moses had commanded Joshua. True exploits are accomplished under divine authority. Faith becomes powerful when it is joined with obedience. The victory was not merely Joshua's achievement; it was God's purpose being fulfilled through a yielded servant. We too must learn to follow God's Word even when His instructions challenge our natural reasoning. *Question* Are your decisions and actions being governed by God's Word and divine authority? *3. The Defeat of the Dreaded Adversaries* The Anakims were the most dreaded adversaries of Israel while they were in the wilderness. In fact, the spies (10 of them) sent said they were like grasshoppers compared to the Anakims (Numbers 13:27-33). It was the fear of those people that made Israel to be punished in the wilderness with 40 years of wandering and deaths. God delayed this fight to be their last fight so that Israel would have, from experience, learnt the art of warfare. They did not know that God had His own strategy of training them to be fit for the warfare against those terrorizing adversaries. When God gives a promise, don't look at your weakness and be asking how possible. God has His own plan to make you fit enough to deal with the enemy before He Himself takes over. "The Lord knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is to follow" and victory is certain. b. 🕊️ DOMINION DAILY DEVOTION ~ DAY 233 DATE: 21ST AUGUST 2026 TOPIC: RELY ON THE LORD ANCHOR SCRIPTURE2 Chronicles 13:18 (NKJV) “Thus the children of Israel were subdued at that time; and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD God of their fathers.” Devotional message: Scripture is filled with testimonies of men and women who placed their confidence entirely in God and experienced victory. Their strength was not in their human ability, resources, experience, or influence; their confidence was in the Lord. Our anchor Scripture gives us a powerful explanation for Judah's victory: “They prevailed because they relied on the LORD.” Their victory was connected to their dependence upon God. Consider Jehoshaphat. When three nations came against Judah and the situation appeared impossible, he did not place his confidence in military strength. He sought the Lord. As Judah worshipped, God intervened and caused their enemies to fight against one another. What Judah could not accomplish through human strength, God accomplished through His divine intervention. We also see this principle in the battle against Amalek. Moses stood on the mountain with the rod of God, while Joshua fought below. As Moses lifted his hands, Israel prevailed; when his hands became heavy and came down, Amalek prevailed. Aaron and Hur therefore supported his hands until victory was secured. There are battles where our greatest strength is not what we can do, but our posture of dependence upon God. David lived by this principle. Before many battles, he inquired of the Lord. Even when he encountered Goliath, his confidence was not in his previous victories, weapons, or military experience. David understood that the size of the enemy could never be greater than the power of the God he trusted. Child of God, where is your confidence today?Perhaps you are facing an examination, a business challenge, difficulties in your marriage, a ministry assignment, financial pressure, opposition, or a situation that appears beyond your ability.
