It can be tempting to emphasize the parts of God’s character that make us feel comfortable while quietly avoiding the parts that challenge us.

But God isn’t divided against Himself.

He is perfectly holy, loving, just, merciful, righteous, and gracious. Every attribute of His character exists in perfect harmony, and together they reveal the fullness of who He is.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” — 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (KJV)

Jesus didn’t simply teach better behaviour.

He called us to transformed hearts.

When He told us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, He revealed that God has always been concerned with more than outward actions. He desires hearts that are surrendered to Him.

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies…” — Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

We rightly celebrate God’s love, grace, and mercy.

But Scripture also reveals a God who is holy, just, righteous, and worthy of our reverence. The cross wasn’t necessary because God overlooked sin. It was necessary because His holiness, justice, mercy, grace, and love all met perfectly in Jesus Christ.
