August 31 - Examples of Jesus’ Compassion #LifeOfChrist “Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them” (Matthew 9:36). Examples in the gospels of Jesus’ compassion are notable. When He saw Mary and others weeping for the deceased Lazarus, “He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled” (John 11:33) and wept with them (v. 35). The phrase “deeply moved in spirit” connotes physical as well as emotional and spiritual anguish. As He saw Lazarus’s friends and family grieving, He entered into real crying with them. When arrested in the garden, Christ was more concerned about the disciples than Himself: “If you [soldiers] seek Me, let these go their way” (John 18:8). While on the cross He still had concern for His mother: “He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’” (19:26). In one of His most poignant expressions of deep compassion for others, Jesus lamented, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling” (Matt. 23:37; cf. Luke 19:41–42). Commenting on two familiar verses about Jesus’ compassion and sympathy (Heb. 4:15; 5:8), Paul Brand said, A stupefying concept: God’s Son learning through His experiences on earth. Before taking on a body, God had no personal experience of physical pain or of the effect of rubbing against needy persons. But God dwelt among us and touched us, and His time spent here allows Him to more fully identify with our pain. Ask Yourself What does Christ’s compassion inspire in you? How could you be more daring and deliberate about taking His heart with you into your world of need, touching others with the love and mercy of Jesus?

YOU’RE NOT SUBJECT TO YOUR THOUGHTS Be Careful For Nothing; But In Every Thing By Prayer And Supplication With Thanksgiving Let Your Requests Be Made Known Unto God (Philippians 4:6 KJV). In the Christian life, you must learn to manage your thoughts. You must know what to do with the thoughts that come to your mind every day. Your victory or defeat often begins with the thoughts you choose to dwell on. That’s why the Spirit gives this instruction: “Be Careful For Nothing.” The word “Careful” is translated from the Greek "merimnaō", which means to take thought. It’s the same word the Lord Jesus used in Matthew 6:25 when He said, “…Take no thought for your life….” It tells you something very important—you don’t have to accept every thought that comes to you. Thoughts come constantly. Even now, your mind is active. There’s a barrage of thoughts coming from different directions. It could be about your work, your family, something you heard, something you saw, etc. But you don’t have to “Take” them. The moment you “Take” a thought, you centre your mind on it. You begin to dwell on it, and as you do, it starts shaping your emotions and influencing your actions. The wrong thoughts are distractions. They’re designed to pull your attention away, to create concern, anxiety, or unrest. That’s why the Word shows you the kind of thoughts to accept: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8). Don’t entertain troubling thoughts. Don’t ruminate on them or convert them into prayer points. Remember, you’re not subject to your thoughts; you’re the one who decides what thoughts to allow. It’s the reason for the renewing of the mind: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2). When your mind is stayed on, and renewed by the Word, it becomes sanctified to decipher and dwell only on the right thoughts. And when your thoughts are right, your words will be right, your life will be right, excellent and full of glory. August 30 🌿 “WHEN I CANNOT SEE HIS HAND” WHEN MY PRAYER SEEMS UNANSWERED 📖 Habakkuk 1:2 (LLV) — “O LORD, how long must I cry for help and You do not hear? I cry out to You about violence, but You do not save.” There are prayers we pray once. And there are other prayers we carry for a very long time. We pray in the morning. Again at night. Tomorrow we pray again. Days pass. Perhaps months. Perhaps years. And still nothing seems to change. Habakkuk knew that frustration. “How long must I cry for help?” This was not the prayer of someone who had just begun asking. He had been crying out to God. And from Habakkuk's perspective, God had not answered. “You do not hear.” Those are bold words. Perhaps even uncomfortable words. But once again, Scripture allows a faithful person to speak honestly to God. Habakkuk does not abandon God. He complains to God. There is an important difference. He could have walked away. Instead, he keeps the conversation going. Even his complaint is an act of faith. He still believes there is Someone listening to the complaint. But Habakkuk cannot understand God's silence. He sees violence. Injustice. Destruction. Conflict. Things are wrong, and Habakkuk knows they are wrong. So he asks the question many believers have asked: “God, why aren't You doing something?” Sometimes our unanswered prayers are personal. Heal someone I love. Restore this relationship. Open this door. Provide what I need. Help my child. Take away this burden. Other times, like Habakkuk, we look at the world around us and pray: “Lord, please make this right.” And then we wait. One of the hardest lessons of prayer is discovering that God's silence is not the same thing as God's absence. Nor does His delay necessarily mean He has said no. God eventually answers Habakkuk. But His answer will not be what Habakkuk expected. In fact, it will create even more questions. That too is part of faith. Sometimes we ask God for an answer when what we really want is an answer we will understand. But God's purposes may be unfolding far beyond what we can currently see. So what do we do while we wait? Habakkuk shows us. We keep talking. We keep asking. We keep bringing the burden back to God. Not because repeating the prayer forces Him to act. But because prayer keeps our hearts turned toward the One who can. Yesterday the psalmist spoke to his own soul: “Hope in God.” Today Habakkuk turns that hope back toward heaven and says: “I'm still here, Lord. I'm still asking.” A new beginning sometimes begins with a prayer we have prayed many times before: when God's answer has not yet come, I can keep bringing my heart to Him. Reflection: Is there a prayer I have nearly stopped praying because I have mistaken God's silence for His lack of concern? Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know the prayers I have carried for a long time and the answers I am still waiting to see. Sometimes Your silence is difficult for me to understand. Help me not to interpret waiting as abandonment. Give me the courage to speak honestly with You, as Habakkuk did, and the faith to keep coming back when nothing seems to change. I do not know what You may already be doing beyond what I can see, but I trust that my prayers are not hidden from You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

The One who wears the true crown of the universe, God’s beloved Son. We need to fall on our face and see Him as the Holy One, the Highest One, the Only One. As you do, all your fears, save the fear of Christ Himself, will melt like an ice cube on a summer day. You will agree with David: ‘The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?’ In the book Prince Caspian, there is a great illustration of this. Lucy sees Aslan the lion for the first time in many years. He has changed since their last encounter. His size surprises her, and she tells him as much. ‘Aslan,’ says Lucy, ‘you’re bigger.’ He replies, ‘That is because you are older, little one.’ Lucy says, ‘Not because you are?’ He replies, ‘I am not. But every year you grow, you find me bigger.’ And so it is in our walk with Christ. The longer we serve Him, the greater He becomes. It’s not that He changes, but that we do. We see dimensions, aspects, characteristics we never saw before; increasing and astonishing increments of His purity, power, and uniqueness. Only when we have fallen at His feet in humility and total dependence will He say to us what He said to His disciples on the Mount where He was transfigured: ‘…“Arise, and do not be afraid”’ (Matthew 17:7 NKJV). Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. *Timeless Truth:* _But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you _*(Matthew 6:33)*. *INTRODUCTION* In 1997, the world watched as Mother Teresa continued her work among the poor and dying in Calcutta despite having very limited material resources. Her ministry was not built around accumulating possessions, but around serving people and pointing them toward Christ. Her life demonstrated that material needs, though important, cannot by themselves satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart. This truth is reflected in Jesus' encounter with the crowd in John 6. The people had witnessed the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. They had received bread miraculously and when they could no longer find Jesus, they sought for Him. However, Jesus exposed the motive behind their search: *“You seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”* (John 6:26) They were pursuing Jesus primarily because of what He could give them, rather than because of who He is. Jesus then redirected their attention from temporary bread to eternal nourishment: The passage challenges us to examine our motives: Are we seeking Christ because we love Him or primarily because of what we hope to receive from Him? The crowd came looking for Jesus, but Jesus knew why they were looking for Him. They had eaten the bread, enjoyed the miracle and wanted more. Their problem was not that they wanted bread. Their problem was that they wanted bread without fully recognizing the Bread of Life. This remains a danger for Christians today. We can seek God for: employment, healing, financial breakthrough, academic success, marriage, protection, promotion, material provision and all these things may legitimately be brought before God in prayer. However, if our relationship with Christ is reduced to what He can provide, we have misunderstood discipleship. Jesus is not merely the Provider of bread; He is the Bread of Life. The greatest blessing is not what God places in our hands, but who God places in our hearts. Physical bread sustains the body temporarily. Money can provide comfort temporarily. Success can bring recognition temporarily. Possessions can give pleasure temporarily, but none of these can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human soul. Only Christ can do that. Therefore, we must examine our priorities. Are we spending more time pursuing things than pursuing God? Are we more excited about God's gifts than about God's presence? Do we pray only when we need something or do we desire fellowship with Christ because we love Him? The answer of Jesus is clear: *Do not labour for the food which perisheth, but for the food which endureth to everlasting life.* Let us therefore, seek Christ above possessions, eternal life above temporary success and God's kingdom above worldly satisfaction. When Christ becomes our greatest treasure, we can enjoy God's blessings without allowing those blessings to become our god. The deepest hunger of the human heart can only be satisfied by Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life. *1. The Pursuit of Temporary Satisfaction* a. The crowd crossed the sea looking for Jesus, but their motivation was primarily physical. The people sought diligently for Jesus after discovering that He had left. Seeking Christ is good, but our motives matter. We should seek Jesus not merely for His blessings, but because He is worthy of our love and devotion. b. The crowd had witnessed a miracle and wanted more. They were attracted to what Jesus could do rather than surrendering themselves to who Jesus is. *(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)* (2 Corinthians 5:7) — Miracles can point us toward Christ, but miracles themselves must never become the foundation of our faith. Physical food satisfies temporarily; eventually, we become hungry again. *Questions* (i) What do I pursue most—God Himself or the blessings I hope to receive from Him? (ii) Have material possessions, comfort, success or recognition become more important to me than spiritual growth? *2. The Priority of Eternal Substance* a. Jesus redirected the crowd from physical food toward the nourishment that leads to eternal life. This does not mean Christians should neglect legitimate work or physical responsibilities. Rather, eternal things must have first priority. Our careers, businesses, education and possessions are important, but none should replace our pursuit of God. b. Jesus made it clear that eternal life ultimately comes from God. *For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:* (Ephesians 2:8). We cannot earn salvation through human achievement. When the crowd asked what they should do, Jesus answered: The central response God desires is genuine faith in Jesus Christ. *Questions* (i) Am I investing as much energy in my spiritual life as I invest in my career and material needs? (ii) Am I trusting Christ for salvation or am I depending on my good works and religious activities? *3. The Provision of Sufficient Bread* a. The crowd remembered the manna given to Israel in the wilderness and asked Jesus for a sign. They referred to Moses and the manna: They were focusing on an earlier miracle instead of recognizing the greater One standing before them. Past spiritual experiences are valuable testimonies, but we must continue walking with Christ today. b. Jesus corrected their understanding: *Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.*(John 6:32.) God's provision in the wilderness pointed beyond physical manna to Christ Himself. We can trust God to provide what we genuinely need while remembering that our greatest need is spiritual life in Christ. The crowd responded: *“Lord, give us this bread always.”* Although they still misunderstood, their request provided an opportunity for Jesus to reveal the truth that became explicit in the following verse: *And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst* (John 6:35).Jesus Himself is the ultimate provision for the deepest hunger of the human soul. *Questions* (i) Where do I turn when I experience emotional, spiritual or inner emptiness? (ii) Am I allowing Christ to satisfy my deepest spiritual hunger through His Word and fellowship? *Prayer Points* 1. Sadly, the crowd in our text sought Jesus for temporal gratification, not eternal salvation! Jesus saw their motive for seeking Him and punctured their search with a scathing, incisive, yet profoundly true remark: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled".* *The Bible is clear that our ultimate source of happiness and pleasure is God. David wrote, "In thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore". Jesus told the disciples: "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full". We will find fullness of joy and pleasures forever when we seek the Lord rightly.* *Beloved, never seek the Lord for superficial motives. They are a mirage; bubbles that never last. Beyond the bread (healing, deliverance, prosperity and miracles) that Christ gives, seek Him who is the Bread of Life, the Bread from heaven. Be discreet to shun dispensing your life energy on labouring for perishable material things that will never satisfy the imperishable soul. "Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?" (Isaiah 55:2). He still saves as many as would come to Him for salvation and restores backsliders who truly repent. God does not despise genuine hunger and thirst for righteousness. Duewel Father, as we pause to rest this day with You, the great feverish world keeps throbbing on. May something of Your blessed Sunday peace flow out into this restless world and quiet it. Let this day be a true blessing to all Your people, and may the influence of this day reach far and wide, making its power felt throughout the world. We ask that Your grace be given so that all who worship You today may receive a blessing. Let Your blessing be upon all assemblies that gather for worship and upon all Sunday schools. May there be divine power in the preaching of Your word. May lost sinners be convicted and led to repentance. May Christians be strengthened and encouraged. May those who are sorrowful be comforted. WE LIVE FOR THE KINGDOM But Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God, And His Righteousness; And All These Things Shall Be Added Unto You (Matthew 6:33 KJV). In life, what you live for determines how you live. The Lord Jesus made it clear that your focus isn’t to be on the material things of this world but on the Kingdom. He said in Luke 12:15, “…Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Many worry about material possessions, but you don’t get better by worrying. No one ever did. The Master made this clear when He asked in Luke 12:25, “...which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?” Worry, rather than improve your condition, distracts you from your true calling. That’s why He said don’t be anxious about your life, what you’ll eat, what you’ll drink, or what you’ll wear. You’ve been called to a higher purpose. Your heavenly Father already made everything you require for life and godliness available to you: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). 2 Peter 1:3 says, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness…” 1 Corinthians 3:21 says, “…all things are yours.” Consequently, He tells you what your priority in life should be: seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. That means everywhere you are, be conscious of the Kingdom. In your family, among your friends, in your workplace, in your school, your concern should be: Is the Kingdom of God established here? If it isn’t, you bring it there. Make Christ known, and see to it that men receive and are established in His righteousness. Manifest His righteousness everywhere. This involves seeking what God wants, not what men want. Even when resolving issues amongst people, you don’t look for who’s right or wrong; you establish the righteousness of God. Many struggle and are frustrated in life because they’re seeking their own way, their own satisfaction. But true satisfaction comes from seeking God’s Kingdom and expressing His righteousness. That’s living for the Kingdom.

Valuing others above self fosters unity and strengthens bonds within God's family. Sadly, several believers associate with class, members of their profession, and what others have, using that to look down on others. T.L. Osborn was to take place on the Malieveld in The Hague, Holland. He was only two years old and had pleurisy. My parents believed in Divine healing and they also preached about that. They anointed their little boy with oil as the Bible teaches us in James 5 and prayed for healing. My parents prayed and believed that the Lord would heal their little one, but instead he died. It would have been easy for my parents to allow bitterness in their heart and get angry with God. But my parents did not allow this. They were not angry with God. God asked them: 'Do you still believe that I am the Lord, your Healer?' And they said: 'Yes Lord, we still believe that because Your Word says so.' Teach us the lesson of quietness and confidence, and help us to rest in the assurance of Your love. Our hearts go out in compassion for the world. Lives are degraded and debased. All creation groans and labors in pain together. We long to do something to help this sinning world, to lift it out of its bondage. Show us what we can do. Give us true pity for the lost. May we have something of Jesus’ compassion, who gave His life to redeem the lost. We also think of the world’s sorrow. Everywhere we look, we see grief. Hearts are breaking. Homes are mourning. Teach us to sympathize with the sorrowing everywhere, and help us to do something to lighten the burdens of affliction and to comfort those who are grieving. Accept what we have done today for You. Our work may seem small in human eyes, but to You, nothing is small when it’s done in the name of Jesus. DBF-001-034 continues with John 2:13. John now moves from the quiet days in Capernaum to Jerusalem at Passover. This verse begins an important change of scene that will reveal Christ’s concern for the holiness of His Father’s house. DAILY BREAD FELLOWSHIP DBF-001-034 Today’s Scripture John 2:13 (ESV) “The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.” Opening the Scriptures Jesus had spent a few days in Capernaum with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples. Now John takes us to Jerusalem. The reason was Passover. Passover was one of Israel’s great appointed feasts. It looked back to the time when God delivered His people from slavery in Egypt. On that first Passover night, judgment came upon Egypt, while the Israelites were protected according to God’s command concerning the blood of the Passover lamb. Generation after generation remembered God’s mighty act of deliverance. Now Jesus Himself was going to Jerusalem for Passover. John has already introduced Him with the remarkable words of John the Baptist: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” The full significance of those words has not yet unfolded. But John is directing our attention toward Christ. Living God’s Word Today Passover reminded Israel that deliverance came from God. That remains an essential truth for us. Human beings naturally want to contribute something toward their acceptance before God. We trust our morality. We remember our good deeds. We compare ourselves with people whom we consider worse than ourselves. We may even trust our church attendance, religious service, or knowledge of Scripture. But none of these things can remove our sin. Salvation belongs to the Lord. The Passover pointed backward to God’s deliverance from Egypt, but it also helps us understand the greater deliverance accomplished through Jesus Christ. The New Testament identifies Christ as our Passover Lamb. He did what we could never do for ourselves. He lived without sin. He willingly went to the cross. He bore the judgment deserved by sinners. He rose from the dead. Our hope before God therefore rests not upon the strength of our religious performance but upon the finished work of Jesus Christ. This should also produce humility. We cannot boast about rescuing ourselves. We cannot look down upon another sinner as though we earned our place before God. If we are saved, we are recipients of grace. Jesus was traveling toward Jerusalem. The disciples could not yet understand everything that Jerusalem would eventually mean. But the Lamb of God was moving according to His Father’s purpose. Today, remember where your confidence must rest. Not in yourself. Not in your goodness. Not in your religious activity. In Christ alone. Question for Today What are you trusting in for your acceptance before a holy God? Respond: “My hope is in Jesus Christ alone.”

Three Angels’ Messages? The Three Angels’ Messages are God’s special messages for last-day Christians. This message is to be shared with the world and will reach its climax with the second coming of Jesus. This threefold message appears in Revelation 14:6-16. The First Angel’s Message The first angel proclaims the everlasting gospel and calls for the restoration of the true worship of God as Creator, because the judgment hour has arrived. Read more about the first angel’s message “Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people—saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water’” (Revelation 14:6, 7). The Second Angel’s Message The second angel warns against all humanly-originated forms of worship and beliefs that are not based completely on God’s Word. The Third Angel’s Message Finally, the third angel proclaims God’s solemn warning against worshiping the beast and his image. Read more about the third angel’s message “Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation....they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.’ Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:9-12). Note: though Scripture symbolically portrays these messages as being proclaimed by three angels, it is actually God’s people—His last-day church—who deliver them to the world. Additionally, two groups emerge—those who choose to follow God’s Word completely and those who choose to mix biblical teachings with human traditions. Accept Jesus Christ as your savior, while there is still time. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Keep all of God's commandments including the fourth Commandment (the Seventh day Sabbath). If you love Me keep My Commandments John 14:15. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:10 His answer: (Jesus) "If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments" Matthew 19:17 (Emphasis added). Salvation is all of grace and not of works, and its fruit is obedience to the Commandments. This obedience develops Christian character and results in a sense of well-being. It is evidence of our love for the Lord and our concern for our fellow human beings.
